Floor Coating Saved the Season Opening of Rumar Strand Restaurant

In the idyllic surroundings of Korppoo island, Rumar Strand camping area and restaurant offer visitors a unique combination of maritime experiences and cozy accommodation. The restaurant established in a former school building with its terrace, 11 charming summer cottages, and a camping area open for tents create the perfect setting for an ideal archipelago vacation.
However, the kitchen of Rumar Strand restaurant had suffered over the years. When old and worn tile floors threatened the upcoming summer season, the owners turned to a bio-based floor coating solution.
The Heavily Used Floor Had Reached the End of Its Lifespan
The restaurant’s kitchen, washing room, and cold storage room complex was in desperate need of renovation. The biggest challenges with the old kitchen floor were cleanliness and safety.
“The floor was cracked and partly broken, which naturally made it poorly suited for professional use. Additionally, it was extremely slippery when wet, and cleaning always took a lot of time,” says Sven Seligson, the owner of Rumar Strand camping area.
The washing room connected to the restaurant’s main kitchen is a total of 33 square meters, and the cold storage room with a wooden floor was 21 square meters, so the total floor area to be maintained in the complex is 54 square meters.
“No matter how much you cleaned, the floor was difficult to get clean. The grout between the tiles had worn away in some places, and there were holes in the floor,” adds Binja Seligson, who was responsible for implementing the coating work.

Coating Selected Due to Fast and Cost-Effective Installation
Renewing a traditional tile floor would have been both expensive and time-consuming. The installation opted for TKR coating based on a convincing recommendation.
“Through a recommendation, I ended up meeting with a TKR expert who introduced me to the bio-based coating. I immediately fell in love with how easy the product is to install, and additionally, the price is considerably more affordable than tile installation. Besides costs, the biggest advantage is time – if I had done the entire coating at once, the work would have taken only about a week,” Binja explains.
The project was scheduled for the winter season when the restaurant was closed, with the goal of completing the work by April before the May season opening. The work required more material than originally calculated, as the wooden floor of the cold storage room in particular required special treatment.
“The TKR expert told me that I could sand the wooden floor of the cold storage room, but there was so much grease on its surface that the work would have taken much longer than planned. I decided to apply a leveling compound on the wooden surface first and then conveniently install the bio-based coating on top of it. This way, the floor was made completely even.”

The Initial Challenges Have Completely Disappeared
After installing the TKR coating, the change has been significant in terms of both appearance and functionality.
“The most important thing is that the floor is not slippery even with wet shoes. Although we didn’t use a special No Slip surface, it still provides excellent grip. We chose gray as the basic color for the coating without flakes, and now the floor even looks beautifully shiny,” Binja praises.
Cleaning the floor surface has completely changed. After just a few cleaning sessions, the ease of maintenance is clearly noticeable according to the Seligsons.
“The biggest benefits are how easy the floor is to clean and wipe. Of course, the general appearance and professionalism of the kitchen has also improved significantly with the coating project,” Sven states.

The Coating Generates Positive Feedback and Inspiration for Other Applications
Aesthetically pleasing, practical, easy to maintain, and safe coating is excellently suited for versatile professional use. Binja also sees many other potential applications for the coating.
“I am very interested in trying the coating, for example, in boats and various metal parts where paint easily peels off. TKR could be a practical solution to many practical problems.”
The TKR coating has also aroused interest in other professional groups in the Korppoo area as Binja has shared her experiences from the floor coating project.
“A great benefit is also that TKR, as a bio-based coating, doesn’t smell at all. Among others, my plumber has been very interested in the product because with epoxy, the smell sticks everywhere causing headaches. TKR doesn’t cause any other health symptoms either, such as rash,” Binja says.
The floor project at Rumar Strand restaurant is an excellent example of how bio-based TKR coating can bring new life to old spaces without massive structural changes.
“Everyone who has seen both the old and this new floor has been absolutely amazed at what a difference TKR has made,” Sven says contentedly.
