HUS Found a Sustainable Solution to its Hospital Flooring Challenges with TKR
HUS, Finland’s largest healthcare provider, serves a region in Uusimaa that covers approximately 2.2 million residents, with a workforce of around 27,500 employees. In HUS hospitals, cleanliness, ease of maintenance, and high-quality surface solutions are essential for smooth day-to-day operations.
Over the years, HUS hospitals have faced challenges with their flooring. In the aging hospital buildings, floors in social areas, as well as shower and washing facilities, constantly needed repair and replacement. Additionally, the cleaning and disinfection of these wet areas required significant time and effort, resulting in high maintenance costs.
TKR played a key role in delivering a durable and sustainable flooring solution for HUS’s spaces.
Durability and Ease of Maintenance are Key Factors in Quality Surface Solutions
HUS’s Hospital World (Sairaalamaailma) decided to carry out a flooring renovation project with Suomen Meriittirakennus Oy, a long-standing partner of HUS Properties with extensive experience in hospital flooring projects.
Closing procedure rooms and wards for the renovation was not feasible due to the patient load, creating operational challenges for the hospital. TKR coatings were selected for the project, as their properties were exceptionally well-suited for the hospital environment, offering several advantages for the project.
The goal of utilizing TKR’s flooring solution was to create a safer and healthier environment for everyone in the hospital. At the same time, the new flooring solutions, with their long lifespan, were expected to bring HUS savings in maintenance and renovation costs, as well as improve hospital efficiency and productivity.

The Result: A More User-Friendly and Cost-Efficient Hospital Environment
Since the introduction of the flooring solutions, several positive changes have been observed in HUS Hospital World hospitals.
TKR coatings are odorless, allowing the spaces to remain open during renovations – enabling the hospital to continue its operations safely and uninterrupted.
The bio-based coatings are also highly durable and long-lasting, reducing the need for repairs and saving costs.
Additionally, TKR’s coating solutions are characterized by easy and fast cleaning, as the material is easy to clean and disinfect and requires minimal maintenance. As a result, the hospital environment is more hygienic and safer for both patients and staff.
Suomen Meriittirakennus Oy’s flooring installer Nico Niiranen says that TKR’s flooring solution has made the renovation project significantly easier to carry out.
“TKR is installer-friendly and easy to use, even in such critical facilities. We’ve been able to renovate shower rooms and procedure rooms one at a time, while surgeons and nurses can continue working uninterrupted around the wards and safely take care of their patients,” says Niiranen.
